Kenya Calhoun

Kenya S. Calhoun's passion for creating art began while she was a financially-challenged graduate student at MUSC in Charleston, SC. In 1997, Kenya found herself devoting most of her finances to further her education, which did not leave much money for other things. She was unable to stare at the blank walls of her apartment any longer and desperately wanted to fill the voids with decoration and art. On a tight budget, she decided to try her hand at creating her own. With no formal training she began to paint. At first on cardboard and window blinds. This would suffice as a frugal student; but later, with her toughest days behind her, she found that she still had the desire to paint.
Kenya now creates mostly with acrylics on canvas, although she has an interest in exploring other mediums also. The bulk of her work is spiritually-motivated and expresses her deep devotion to her religion. Ms. Calhoun's paintings are of an ethereal nature and often are inspired by sermons, Bible verses or quotes, books, and songs. Her hope is that her artwork is just as inspiring and thought-provoking to the viewer. Kenya believes that painting is a great expression of creativity and spirit for her, as well as being therapeutic. "I don't believe that I have a defined style just yet...I'm still finding my way, I guess", says Kenya. Ms. Calhoun is mother to a precious daughter, Imani, who provides her with plenty of inspiration, as well. MAC is pleased to have Kenya as an active member of the Council.
