Corie Thomas Johnson

Corie Thomas Johnson is a Thomson native who trained in ballet, tap, competitive jazz, and contemporary dance forms in Columbia County at various dance studios in the area. She pursued her BFA in Dance Performance at the University of Georgia, and was a member of the CORE Concert Dance Company while in the UGA Dance Department. Corie studied modern dance, aerial dance, and Laban Movement Analysis under Bala Sarasvati (artistic director of CORE). While with UGA, Corie trained with nationally renowned choreographers: Serenity Smith (formerly Cirque de soleil), Emily Milam Kent (Pilobolus), Larry Keigwin (Keigwin & Co.), and Sabrina Madison-Cannon (formerly Philadanco). Corie received the Cynthia Jarvis summer study scholarship from UGA in 2006 to attend the Florida Dance Festival in Miami, Florida, where she performed and trained in modern dance with Larry Keigwin; contact improvisation with Chris Akin, and African dance. In 2008, she received a UGA dance scholarship toward her tuition. She performed and studied in Puebla, Mexico at the Performatica Festival under the direction of Denise Posnak in 2008. Corie had her Senior Exit choreography, "Tangled Affliction," chosen to be adjudicated at the 2008 Southeastern College Dance Festival. While at UGA, Corie taught creative movement at FloorSpace movement studio and taught modern through the PACES program under the direction of Rebecca Enghauser at UGA. Since graduation, Corie is working with the YMCA as a personal trainer and a group fitness instructor. She is currently Program Director of the Thomson Family YMCA. During Fall of 2008, Corie was head of the dance department and dance instruction with the Jessye Norman School of the Arts. She is one of the co-founders of Notchyomamas Modern Project, a modern dance company from Atlanta and Thomson. Corie is excited about returning to her roots in Thomson and is looking forward to spreading her passion for dance to her community. Dance is a fulfilling physical and emotional art. Corie believes that everyone can find their true meaning in life through movement.
